Kurdish fighters fighting against extremists from the Islamic State in Kobane on the Syrian-Turkish border have captured a strategic hill above that city, the BBC reports.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and local officials said Kurdish units had retaken control of Mishtenur Hill, which overlooks the city, after fierce fighting.
Observers from the Observatory stated that the conquest of that hill cut off a key supply route for the Islamic State within the front line.
According to the Observatory, 11 fighters of the Islamic State were killed in the fighting, and a large amount of weapons and ammunition were seized.
Jihadists have been trying to capture Kobane since September, but they encountered fierce resistance from Kurdish fighters.
Kurdish units have advanced in recent weeks, with the support of airstrikes by the US-led international coalition against Islamic State positions.
