At least 19 Iraqi policemen were killed today in a clash with jihadists from the Islamic State who captured the town of El Wafa in Anbar province, the Iraqi police announced.
The attack on El Wafa, a town about 45 kilometers from Anbar's capital, Ramadi, began yesterday morning. The Islamic State captured three large cities west of Ramadi - Hit, Qubaysha and El Wafa. "We were detained in a police building near the city. The Islamic State managed to surround us. If the army had not come to help, we would all have been killed," said an unnamed representative of the local authorities.
