Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said the US believed it was probably the first time Tehran had carried out airstrikes from Iran on targets in Iraq, the AP reported.
The US does not coordinate airstrikes and military activities with Iran, Kirby pointed out.
The US continues its air mission in Iraq and says it is up to the Iraqi government to avoid conflicts in its airspace.
Iranian military leaders have announced that dozens of their fighters are in Iraq and are fighting alongside Kurdish forces against Islamic State extremists.
The US did not invite Iran to join the international coalition in the fight against the Islamic State, while Iran stated that it would not join in any case, the US agency recalled.
