At least 63 people died today, more than half of them civilians, in air strikes by Syrian forces on Raqqa, a stronghold of the extremist Islamic State, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced.
The director of that organization, based in Britain, Abdel Rahman, said that another 20 bodies of the victims have not been identified, so it is not known whether they are civilians or jihadists.
According to him, 36 civilians were among the dead, AFP reported.
Rahman said most of the people were killed in the bombing of the Raqqa industrial zone.
The Islamic State became active in the spring of 2013 during the conflict in Syria. Members of that extremist organization conquered Raka, which they declared their capital.
Syrian forces previously rarely bombed Raqqa, but that changed in late summer when a decision was made to step up attacks on Islamic State positions in northern and eastern Syria.
