Kurdish forces managed to thwart a new attempt by the Islamic State (IS) to cut off the city of Kobane from the border with Turkey, before Kurdish reinforcements could be deployed.
Before dawn, AFP reports, the jihadists tried, for the fourth day in a row, to attack the Syrian side of the border at a time when the Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga unit was preparing to enter Kobani.
"Peshmerga" forces are ready to go, but they will not be able to deploy before today, claims the Kurdish agency Rudav, stating that there are still unresolved "technical issues" regarding their transit through Turkey.
Kurdish forces, supported by US air operations, have been fighting IS around Kobane for weeks.
The US military said US jets carried out five airstrikes near Kobane over the weekend, destroying seven IS vehicles and one building.
More than 800 people have been killed in the ground fighting for Kobane since the beginning of the IS offensive, which began on September 16.
Jihadists lost 481 fighters, and Kurds 313, claims the NGO Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, adding that 21 civilians were among the dead.
