At least 26 people, mostly children, have died after a ferry capsized in a lake in Zambia, police said.
Among those killed in the accident are parents and children between the ages of six and 15, as well as a baby. State media reported that 23 children were killed in the accident.
The ferry was transporting the children to another school across Lake Kariba in the south of the country, where they were to participate in the 50th anniversary of Zambia's independence celebrations.
The authorities state that the accident occurred due to overloading of the ship, as it was carrying 20 more people than its capacity.
The Vice President of Zambia, Guy Scott, visited the accident site and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased.
