The Islamic State (IS) operation to capture the Syrian border town of Kobane has been halted and Kurdish defenders are likely to be able to hold off their onslaught with the help of US aircraft, US officials said today. The front line between IS jihadists and Kurdish defenders has not moved for more than a week, according to officials in Washington.
"I think the Kurdish defenders will be able to hold (the strike)," said an unnamed US Central Command official, AFP reported. Photojournalist AFP reported that he had witnessed IS jihadists fleeing from planes and bombardment of their positions near the city. Kobane. Hearing the sound of fighter jets, the jihadists fled down Tilsehir hill, west of besieged Kobane, to hide in trenches most likely dug by Kurdish fighters, the agency reported.
