Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived today on a one-day visit to Afghanistan during which he met with President Ashraf Ghani, First Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostup and his political opponent Abdullah Abdullah, a Turkish official said.
Erdogan will also visit 390 Turkish soldiers stationed in Afghanistan. Turkey, which has close religious, historical and cultural ties with Afghanistan, especially with the Uzbek community, refused to participate in a combat mission in that country, but is now contributing to the security, training and reconstruction of that country.
Ghani took office as president in late September after elections that led to months of political gridlock that threatened to push Afghanistan to the brink of civil war.
