ISIL fighters control more than a third of Kobani, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced today, after three weeks of fighting with Kurdish forces, who are supported by US-led coalition airstrikes.

"ISIL controls more than a third of Kobani. All the eastern areas, a small part of the northeast and an area in the southeast," Observatory chief Rami Abdulraham told Reuters.

Fighter jets of the international coalition led by the US again targeted the positions of the Islamic State not far from the Syrian city.

"The Kurdish militia is still in control of most of the city and is resisting the attacks of the Islamic State army," the U.S. Command for Operations in the Middle East and Central Asia (CENTCOM) announced last night.

In the new air attacks of the international coalition, eight armored vehicles, an ammunition warehouse, as well as a command and logistics post were destroyed.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby warned, however, that airstrikes may not be enough to save Kobani.

He said the international coalition was doing everything it could from the air to prevent the jihadists from taking over the city.

Australia, which a few days ago officially joined the international coalition against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, carried out the first airstrikes against the jihadists yesterday.

Australian fighter jets hit their first target in Iraq, the Australian Ministry of Defense announced.
