The epicenter is located 85 kilometers from Puer, at a shallow depth, between five and ten thousand meters below the ground surface.

The earthquake was also felt in the capital of the province, Kunming, and was followed by a dozen smaller aftershocks.
Videos posted on social media show damaged houses with collapsed roofs and cracked walls, as well as panicked residents taking to the streets.
Xinhua news agency reported that telephone connections in the area were partially cut.
About 600 people died in the earthquake that hit Yunnan in August.
