An attacker driving an excavator crashed into a passenger bus in Jerusalem today, overturning it and killing a pedestrian, before he was shot dead by a police officer.
Israeli police said five other people suffered minor injuries in the incident, which has been labeled a "terrorist attack", suggesting Palestinian involvement is suspected.
The attack took place in a neighborhood where ultra-orthodox Jews live near a railway line.
The area is located near the unofficial border between Jewish West and East Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 war, and has a predominantly Arab population, according to the Associated Press.
Israel's Channel 10 television showed a video of the attack taken on a cell phone.
The video shows a yellow excavator hitting the bus. Initial reports stated that the bus was empty, and later that passengers and pedestrians were injured.
Police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said a police officer who happened to be nearby shot and killed the attacker to stop him.
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat said the swift action prevented more casualties and appealed for peace at a time when tension in the region is high due to the conflict between the Israeli army and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Previously, Palestinians driving bulldozers killed people in Jerusalem.
