At least two people, including an 11-year-old boy, were killed today in Egypt in clashes between security forces and supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsi, while six police officers were wounded in a bomb attack in Cairo.
Demonstrations were held in Cairo and several other provinces to protest last year's military coup that ousted Morsi.
Clashes broke out when security forces moved to disperse the protesters. In the village of Dalga, in the southern province of Minija, hundreds of mostly young people marched through the streets and threw stones at the police, who returned fire.
Citing witnesses and unnamed security officials, the agencies reported that an 11-year-old boy died from head and chest injuries.
Demonstrators and police also clashed in the city of Fayoum, southwest of Cairo, where one person was shot in the back and died on the spot. For now, it is not clear whether a protester or a bystander was killed.
Indeed, two smaller bombs exploded near a group of policemen who were on a bridge in central Cairo. The Ministry of Health announced that at least six people were wounded. State television announced that the target of the attack was a checkpoint set up due to an announced protest by Morsi's supporters.
