The head of Iranian diplomacy, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said today that it is difficult to imagine negotiations with the US, in which "nobody trusts anymore", a day after the reimposition of US sanctions on Tehran. "Imagine the negotiations now, how could we trust them? America keeps making U-turns, nobody can trust them anymore," Zarif told reporters. Washington pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal in May and says it wants to put "maximum pressure" on Iran through new sanctions. Nevertheless, President Donald Trump has repeatedly indicated that he is ready to negotiate. "Now that we are maintaining maximum economic pressure on the Iranian regime, I remain open to a more comprehensive agreement that would address all of Iran's harmful activities, Iran's missile program and Iran's support for terrorism," the US president said on Monday. Zarif, on the other hand, claims that "before, no one supported Iran, and Assad is supported by all the countries of the world". The Europeans, also signatories to the nuclear agreement, expressed their determination to preserve the agreement and "protect European companies that legitimately do business with Iran." The first wave of US sanctions entered into force yesterday and includes the blocking of financial transactions and the import of raw materials, as well as punitive measures in the sectors of car and aircraft purchases. The second wave of sanctions, in November, will hit the oil and gas sector in Iran as well as the Iranian central bank.
