Exchange of fire on the Golan Heights

The Israeli army returned fire to Syria from where its soldiers were fired upon in the occupied Golan Heights, the country's army announced.

"Syria opened fire on Israeli forces in the central part of the Golan Heights. The army returned fire," stated the army's statement, reported by Reuters.

There were no casualties on the Israeli side in this incident. An Israeli military source claims that a brief exchange of fire took place near the Quneitra border crossing and that a Syrian soldier fired at them.

The Israeli army is still checking whether its members were targeted, according to this source. A few hours earlier, a Syrian shell fell in the village of Majdal Shams on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, near the Israeli security fence. There are no reports of casualties.

The fire from Syria, where there is an ongoing civil war, is occasionally transferred to the Golan Heights, which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war. Until then, the plateau belonged to Syria.

Israel annexed the strategic plain in 1981, a move that was not recognized by the international community.
