A Japanese housewife beat her 70-year-old husband to death with a coffee mug after discovering he had been cheating, local media reported.

According to "Asahi Shimbun" and other Japanese newspapers, the 61-year-old woman allegedly attacked her husband after she found out about his extramarital affair, hitting him repeatedly on the face and head with a cup, AFP reported.

The victim of the attack, University of Yokohama professor Yasuo Hirose, was taken to hospital but later died.

His wife, Emiko Hirose, later told police: "He had an affair with a woman I hate. I went crazy and hit him with a cup more than ten times."

The professor's wife has been arrested on charges of attempted murder, Japanese media reported, although the police have yet to confirm this.
