Iran has launched its first domestically produced destroyer into the Caspian Sea, the first major Iranian military presence in the oil-rich region, Iranian state television said.

The previous version of the Jamaran destroyer has been in the Persian Gulf since 2010

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad presented the Jamaran-2 destroyer in the regional city of Anzali, located about 250 kilometers northwest of Tehran. According to reports, Jamaran-2 will join the Navy in the next few months, after the final tests.

The destroyer weighs 1.400 tons, is 94 meters long and can reach a speed of up to 30 knots. It has a helicopter pad, is equipped with surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, as well as anti-aircraft batteries and complex radar and communications terminals, the report said.

The previous version of the Jamaran destroyer has been in the Persian Gulf since 2010. Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, the countries surrounding the Caspian Sea, have not reached an agreement on the exploitation of resources.

Iran is in favor of equal sharing of marine resources, however, other countries agreed on the issue among themselves, which is why its share is 12 percent.
