Iran's supreme religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, today rejected the US offer to continue bilateral talks on Iran's nuclear program.
"You (the Americans) want to negotiate while pointing your guns at Iran. This will not intimidate the Iranian people," Ayatollah Khamenei said in a speech to air force commanders.
Yesterday, the USA confirmed the introduction of new sanctions on Iran, a few days after the "serious offer" of American Vice President Joseph Biden to Tehran for direct negotiations within the framework of the "six", which consists of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (USA, France, Great Britain, Russia and China) and Germany.
"Some were happy about that offer of negotiations, but negotiations will not solve anything," the ayatollah said.
After a months-long break in negotiations, the "six" and Iran agreed to resume talks on February 26 in Kazakhstan.
The international community accuses Iran of wanting to produce nuclear weapons, which Tehran persistently denies and claims that the nuclear program is intended exclusively for civilian use. Iran is under international sanctions over its program and is seeking their lifting as a precondition for negotiations.
