Nairobi: A five-story building collapsed, two people died

Two people were killed when a five-story building collapsed in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, a police official said today.

Pius Masai Mwachi of the National Disaster Management Unit said rescue operations were underway at a five-storey apartment building that collapsed last night in Nairobi's Huruma Ngei neighbourhood.

He said that one body was pulled out of the ruins, and that another person who was pulled out later succumbed to his injuries, while three more people were taken to hospitals.

According to him, several people are still missing, and many residents of the building managed to escape before it completely collapsed.

Building collapses have become common in Nairobi, where four million people live in slums or unsanitary settlements, according to the AP agency.
