In two airstrikes in the province of Shabwa in the southeast of Yemen, at least 30 people, most likely members of Al Qaeda, were killed today, the commander of the army in that region announced.
"Thirty terrorists were killed and dozens wounded in two airstrikes" in the city of Azan, Ahmed al-Makdashi said.
Local officials previously announced that nine jihadists were killed in an attack by an American drone on a house where Al Qaeda members met and a nearby car, reports AFP.
Several hundred al-Qaeda members are believed to have fled to Azan, just after the army captured their strongholds in Jar and Zinjibar in Yemen's southern Abyan province.
Al Qaeda fighters also fled to the town of Shukra, where, according to officials, fierce fighting broke out between the army and the jihadists.
"Al Qaeda is still resisting and fighting is going on in and around the city," the unnamed Yemeni official said. He said that "the army surrounded the city from three sides".
According to residents, dozens of people left Azan after the drone attack.
