The company BP (British Petroleum) has confirmed that it has reached an agreement with the largest group of plaintiffs on compensation for the environmental disaster caused by the oil spill from the Deepwater Horizon well in the Gulf of Mexico.
Approximately 100.000 fishermen, local residents and workers who participated in the restoration of the damage will receive 7,8 billion dollars. BP says the money will be paid out of a special $20 billion fund the company has set up to compensate for damages.
"From the beginning, BP has been focused on fulfilling its obligations to the population in the Gulf of Mexico, so we have worked hard to provide them with adequate compensation," said the company's CEO, Bob Dudley.
However, this company has not yet admitted guilt for this environmental disaster and is still facing lawsuits from the US and other oil companies.
