Iranian state television carried a statement from the Ministry of Intelligence, according to which the arrested Iranian was trained at a US base in neighboring Afghanistan and Iraq, and his task would be to pass false information to Iran's intelligence service.
"A Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent of Iranian nationality began his mission after training in the use of weapons. However, he was discovered by Iranian intelligence agents and his mission was exposed," the ministry said in a statement broadcast on state television.
As planned, this Iranian was supposed to start a mission at the Bagram base in Afghanistan, but agents lured him to Iran and arrested him there, Reuters reported.
Former and current US officials told the British agency in November that Iranian authorities had managed to reveal the identities of several CIA agents.
Iran announced in May that 30 people had been arrested on suspicion of spying for the US, and last Thursday 15 people were charged with intelligence work for Washington and Israel.
In Iran, spying is punishable by death.
