Members of the forces of the National Transitional Council have been tightening the ring around Sirte for weeks, trying to break the resistance of forces loyal to Gaddafi. So far, many fighters and civilians have been killed in the fighting, and many thousands of city residents have been left homeless.
The new Libyan leadership is trying to form a democratic government and believes that this will be possible only after all of Sirte is captured.
The commander of the National Transitional Council claims that fighters loyal to Gaddafi now control only a small area of the city, 700 meters by 1,5 km, which is mostly residential blocks. The biggest obstacle facing fighters loyal to the new government are snipers perched on top of buildings.
Because of this defense strategy of Gaddafi's forces, supporters of the National Transitional Council started using tanks to get closer to the buildings, and behind the tanks, the infantry is ready to continue fighting.
Gaddafi is believed to be hiding somewhere in the Libyan desert.
