The United States of America has announced that it will veto the attempt for the Palestinian state to become a full member of the United Nations. "If there is a vote in the UN Security Council, the US will veto," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said. The Palestinians have announced that they will officially ask the UN to accept their state as a full member of the world organization. In order for a country to become a member of the UN, the consent of the Security Council is required, in which the US has the right of veto. The Palestinians declared their independence back in 1988, which was recognized by more than a hundred countries. They have observer status in the UN, but not as a state, but as an entity. According to Nuland, such an American attitude should not shock anyone.
