"The attackers destroyed a large billboard, burned a UN flag and set fire to some of the scenery, but no UN personnel were injured," said Chris Ginn of the Palestine Refugee Agency (UNWRA).
UNWRA condemned this attack against the children of Gaza and against the UN and asked the local authorities to investigate.
The attack on this camp in the north-eastern part of Gaza took place on the night between Wednesday and Thursday, on the eve of a kite-flying competition on the beach, in which three thousand children are supposed to participate. The competition will take place today despite the attack, with participants attempting to break the world record for the number of children flying kites at the same time.
The "Summer Games" in which the kite-flying competition was organized are part of a six-week summer program involving about 250.000 children from the Gaza Strip.
Similar attacks happened at last year's summer camp where groups of boys and girls participated. At the time, it was suspected that the perpetrators were members of Islamist extremist groups that oppose the mixing of boys and girls.
