The UN Office for Human Rights today expressed concern over reports that opposition activists in Bahrain are being tortured in detention. Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for High Commissioner Navi Pillay, said that the UN has information that some detainees have been severely beaten after being sentenced to prison terms. and four are believed to have died as a result of torture.
Shamdasani told journalists in Geneva that Pillay invited Bahrain to investigate the allegations. The spokeswoman added that if Bahrain does not do so, the UN will launch an international investigation.
