Five generals of the Libyan army, who defected from the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, called today in Italy and other fellow officers to join them in supporting the rebels.

Officials of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs today presented the generals, two colonels and one major, who escaped from Libya to Italy, at a press conference in Rome.

General Melud Masoud Halasa said that Gaddafi's forces now have only 20 percent of their capacity compared to the period before the rebellion, and that, at best, only 10 generals remained loyal to the Libyan leader.

Mahmoud Shamam of Libya's National Transitional Council, who also spoke at the conference, said more officers from the rebel-held Libyan capital Tripoli and Misurata had also defected to Tunisia.

He added that about 120 officers left Gaddafi's army in recent days.
