"Some contracts have already been fulfilled, others are still ongoing. The significance of the contracts is in their size. In the last four years, more than 11 billion dollars worth of equipment was the subject of contracts," said Sergey Ladyugin at the arms fair in Brazil.
He said that Russia has already delivered fighter planes and helicopters to Caracas. Construction of an aircraft maintenance and training center is also underway
"Why did Venezuela buy those weapons? Because it's time to modernize its military forces," Ladyugin said.
The US, which is a thorn in the side of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, is worried about the delivery of large quantities of weapons from Moscow to Caracas, France Press estimates.
In 2009, Venezuela ordered a hundred tanks and the same number of surface-to-air missiles from Moscow.
A contract was also signed for the delivery of 24 more Sukhoi combat aircraft as well as 50 helicopters and 100.000 more Kalashnikov assault rifles.
