Libyan rebels have rejected the African Union (AU) peace plan because it does not respect their main demand for Muammar Gaddafi's ouster and because it foresees reform of the current system of government, which they want to abolish.
"The initiative of the African Union does not include the departure of Gaddafi and his sons from the Libyan political scene and that is why it is an outdated idea," said the president of the rebel council, Abdel Jalil, at a press conference in Benghazi.
He emphasized that Gaddafi's departure was the first demand that the rebels made after the establishment of the Council.
The spokesperson of this body, Hafiz Goga, stated that the AU initiative talks about reforms within the Libyan system and that this proposal was rejected.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the US wants Gaddafi to step down and leave Libya, but she did not include that in the list of non-negotiable demands. h
Clinton avoided answering a question about the US position on the AU peace plan. She said that she had seen parts of the proposal, but that she would wait to see the complete document.
