Libyan rebels announced today that they continue to move towards the west of Libya and that they have taken control of the town of Brega, about 80 kilometers west of Ajdabiya. Rebel Abdelsalam al-Madani told France Press that the rebels have taken over Brega. "We are in the center of Brega," he said in a telephone statement to AFP. "Gaddafi's forces have retreated. Now they are in Al-Bisher (about 30 kilometers from Brega) and the rebels are moving towards that area," he added. .International forces led by the US, France and Britain launched air strikes on Libya last Saturday to enforce the no-fly zone and protect civilians.
Foreign forces can leave the country
Libyan rebels thanked France for its role in the military coup against the Gaddafi regime, but stressed that foreign forces can now leave the country, according to a letter published today in the newspaper "Le Figaro".
"Your planes destroyed the tanks that were ready to step on Benghazi. The Libyan people see you as liberators and their gratitude will be eternal," says the letter of rebel leader Mahmoud Jibril to French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
"We will not need foreign forces. We won the first battle thanks to you, but we will win the next phase with our own resources," the letter states.
It is also pointed out that the Libyan people, as well as neighboring friends, especially Egypt and Tunisia, see France's help as a great gesture towards the Arab world.
