Late last night, the US blocked a draft UN Security Council declaration calling for restraint in Gaza, demanding an investigation into the conflict with the Israeli army after the death of 16 Palestinians, diplomatic sources said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, for his part, demanded an "independent and transparent investigation" into the clashes in the Gaza Strip that broke out on Friday during Palestinian demonstrations near the border with Israel.
On behalf of the Arab member countries of the UN Security Council, Kuwait proposed on Friday a draft declaration calling for restraint from violence and investigations.
The draft mentions the right of Palestinians to demonstrate peacefully.
Yesterday was a day of mourning for the Palestinians due to the death of 16 people. Thousands of people attended the funerals.
