Extremists fired five rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel early this morning, the Israeli military said after a day of mass Palestinian protests along the Palestinian territory's border with Israel.
Tanks shelled Hamas positions in response to the missiles, the army said.
Four Palestinians, including three teenagers, were killed in protests on Sunday and dozens were wounded by live bullets fired by Israeli soldiers.
The rocket fire threatens to undermine Egypt's efforts to cement a deal that Hamas leaders hope will ease the crippling Israeli and Egyptian blockade of the densely populated territory.
There were no injuries in the rocket attacks and no Palestinian organization claimed responsibility, reports AP.
Despite the rocket fire, today Israel opened two border crossings, Kerem Shalom and Erez, into the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media.
The Kerem Shalom crossing is open for the transport of goods and the Erez for the crossing of people with permits and fishing will be allowed in most of the Mediterranean Sea as previously approved.
If the lull prevails, the restrictions will be further lifted later in accordance with the agreement with Egypt.
Rocket warning sirens sounded in southern Israel after about 40.000 Palestinians protested by the border fence.
Israeli military spokesman Brigadier General Ronen Manelis said the protests were relatively low-key.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the army's preparations and its efforts to maintain calm during yesterday's demonstrations.
Most of the protesters stayed away from the border, although small groups of activists approached, throwing stones and explosives at Israeli soldiers.
Soldiers fired back with tear gas and opened fire, killing four, including three 17-year-olds, and wounding 64 Palestinians with live ammunition.
