NATO does not want a new arms race, nor a new Cold War with Russia, but it will know how to defend itself if it becomes necessary, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said today in Washington on the occasion of the organization's 70th anniversary.
In a speech to the US Congress, Stoltenberg appealed for "preserving the unity" of the 29 NATO members, as disagreements between the US and Turkey arose.
The former Prime Minister of Norway received a standing ovation from members of Congress at the end of his speech. Stoltenberg ended his speech by promising all members to join the Alliance - "One for all, all for one".
"We have overcome our differences in the past and we need to overcome our differences in the future as well," Stoltenberg said.
The NATO Secretary General said that Russia is among the "unprecedented challenges" facing the Alliance.
Stolteberg once again called on Russia to respect the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty it signed with the US during the Cold War.
"We don't want a new arms race. We don't want a new Cold War," added Stoltenberg, stating that NATO will take the necessary measures to ensure security.
