At least 15 people were killed last night during an operation by security forces against suspected jihadists in eastern Sri Lanka, local police said.
Three women and six children were among the victims.
Soldiers and police officers tried to break into the hideout of the Islamic State when three suicide bombers detonated their explosives.
The police found the bodies of the jihadists who carried out the attack in the house where the confrontation took place.
The police operation was carried out in the town of Kalmunai, in the east of Sri Lanka.
Suicide bombers attacked Christian minority churches and luxury hotels last Sunday morning, killing 253 people. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.
A Sri Lankan official blamed the attacks on renegade members of small local Muslim extremist groups.
Several countries have urged their nationals to avoid traveling to Sri Lanka or to leave the country if they are there.
