US Rear Admiral John Ring, commander of the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, has been relieved of his duties due to a "loss of confidence in his ability to command", the US Southern Command announced today.
As reported by Voice of America, the brief statement says that Ring has been fired, but does not provide detailed reasons.
A spokesman for the Southern Command, which oversees Guantanamo, said the decision was the result of a months-long investigation.
Ring has operated Guantanamo since April 2018. His post will be taken over by General John Hussey, the current deputy commander.
