A strong earthquake of magnitude 7,5 hit Papua New Guinea today, after which a tsunami warning was issued in that country and on the nearby Solomon Islands.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake was located 45 kilometers northeast of Kokop.
They stated that the earthquake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
Shallow earthquakes usually cause more damage on the surface of the earth, but the Institute estimated that damage and injuries would be small due to the sparse population.
Papua New Guinea is located on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, east of Indonesia.
It is located in the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", where most of the world's earthquakes and volcanic activity occur.
