More than 2.000 people marked the 30th anniversary of the pro-democracy protest in Beijing's Tiananmen Square that ended in bloodshed today in Hong Kong.
Demonstrators took to the streets of Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese territory, carrying yellow umbrellas with the words "Support Freedom, Oppose Evil Laws."
Some carried a black casket and others wore the numbers six and four, commemorating June 4, 1989, when Chinese Communist authorities ordered the military to quell student-led demonstrations in Tiananmen Square.
In the confrontation with unarmed demonstrators on the night of June 3-4, 1989, hundreds, if not thousands, of the citizens present were killed.
Commemorative gatherings are strictly prohibited in the rest of China, and those who try to raise awareness often face fines.
However, Hong Kong honors the victims and the spirit of the Tiananmen protests every year.
