US President Donald Trump said today that he disagreed with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, whom he fired today, specifically citing the Iranian nuclear issue.
"We worked well together, but we disagreed on some things," Trump told reporters in the White House garden before leaving for California.
"When you look at the Iran nuclear deal, I thought it was terrible, and he (Tillerson) thought the deal was OK," Trump said, adding that the two "don't think the same way."
Today, Trump suddenly fired Secretary of State Tillerson and replaced him with former CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
Although it has long been rumored that Trump plans to fire Tillerson, Trump said that he decided "only recently" and "independently". Tillerson "will be a lot happier now," Trump said.
Two White House officials said Tillerson was told on Friday that he had been fired, although it was not clear who fired him.
A State Department official said today that Rex Tillerson has not even spoken to President Trump and is not aware of why he was fired.
"The secretary of state has not spoken with the president this morning and does not know the reasons (for the removal), but he is grateful to be in office and continues to think that serving the public is a noble task that should not be regretted," said Steve Goldstein, a senior official. of the State Department.
Tillerson cut his tour of Africa short and headed home hours before Trump's announcement.
