The House of Representatives of the US Congress adopted a resolution condemning the allegedly racist comments made by President Donald Trump about members of Congress from minority communities.
The House of Representatives, which has a majority of Democrats, condemned Trump's tweets, in which he said that four Democratic lawmakers should return to their countries of origin, and Democratic Congressman Al Green then presented a request for the impeachment of the president.
House Republicans strongly opposed the condemnation of Trump's tweets, which eventually passed by a vote of 240 to 187.
Before that, both Trump and Republican leaders in Congress denied that the president was racist.
The adopted resolution states that the House of Representatives "strongly condemns" Trump's "racist comments that have legitimized and reinforced fear and hatred against newly arrived Americans and people who are not white."
Republicans argue that Democrats are using the public's attention to score political points, while Democrats find Trump's comments reprehensible, especially since they come from the president of the country.
Republicans condemned the resolution.
"It's all politics," said the Republican leader in the lower house of Congress, Kevin McCarthy, while Congressman Steve Scalise, the second-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives, concluded that it was "just another opportunity to attack the president."
Trump has repeatedly attacked four members of the House of Representatives, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayana Presley and Rashida Tlaib, none of whom are white.
Trump did not back down and said on Twitter that congressmen who are not satisfied with the USA "can leave".
Not long after, Texas Congressman Al Green made accusations against the president and effectively called for a vote to impeach Trump.
An impeachment vote could potentially come this Sunday.
Many Democrats consider such a move premature, but Green wants to capitalize on the growing revulsion against Trump over his racist tweets.
He said that Trump is unfit for office and that "enough is enough".
Greene has so far tried twice unsuccessfully to cause a vote to impeach Trump.
