British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Friday evening that Iran had seized two ships in the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran soon announced that one of the ships had been released.
Hunt said an emergency cabinet meeting would be held soon to see what could be done to free the ships.
According to him, the ships are under the flags of Great Britain and Liberia.
The crew is made up of nationals of various countries, but Hunt stated that he did not believe there were any Britons among them.
Iran announced a little earlier that it had stopped the British tanker "Stena Impero".
After Hunt's statement, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported last night that Iranian forces detained a second oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, the Liberian-flagged Mesdar, which was released after receiving a "warning to comply with environmental regulations" and sailed away. from the territorial waters of Iran.
