Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened Hamas to "respond vigorously" after the militants sent a drone to drop a bomb on the Israeli side of the Gaza-Israel fence.
This was the first attempted attack of its kind in Gaza.
The Israeli military said the drone dropped what "appears to be an explosive device" that damaged a military vehicle near the fence.
The army said it retaliated with an airstrike against the Palestinian militants responsible for the attack. It is not known if there were any injuries on the Palestinian side.
Netanyahu is in the middle of the campaign, with less than two weeks left until the election.
"Hamas is responsible for everything that comes out of Gaza and all attacks will be met with a vigorous response," Netanyahu said.
Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, is known to be developing a drone program and has previously used them for reconnaissance missions across the border and into Israel.
However, the use of drones for attacks was not previously characteristic of this group.
