Iran has started unannounced military exercises for special operations forces near the border with Turkey, Iranian state television reported today.
The military exercises are being held at the time of Iran's opposition to the planned Turkish invasion of northern Syria against Kurdish fighters, reports AP, noting that the Syrian Kurds are American allies in the war against the Islamic State.
Iranian television announced that the exercises are being supervised by the commander-in-chief of the Iranian army, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi.
The TV station, however, did not mention the expected Turkish operation, nor did it specify how many soldiers are taking part in the exercises being carried out in the province 620 kilometers northwest of Tehran.
