The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, said today that the death of the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is a moment when we should remember the victims of terrorism, his deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, reported.
Haq told reporters that the UN chief "noted" US President Donald Trump's announcement of al-Baghdadi's death.
The Deputy Spokesman of the Secretary General said that the Islamic State "committed terrible crimes and caused the tragedy and death of thousands of men, women and children and we should use this moment to remember the victims and families of victims of terrorism everywhere in the world".
"We have made it clear that any progress against the Islamic State should be welcomed," Haq said, when asked why the United Nations only "noticed" and did not welcome al-Baghdadi's death.
