US President Donald Trump today requested the disclosure of the name of the whistleblower whose report triggered the impeachment inquiry.
Trump claims that the whistleblower gave false information.
He hinted, without citing evidence, that the whistleblower could be charged with fraud, reports Reuters.
"The whistleblower should be exposed because the whistleblower gave incorrect information. He made up the story," Trump said while addressing reporters at the White House.
The impeachment inquiry into Trump was launched on September 24 in the lower house of Congress after the release of a whistleblower report, which alleged that Trump used his position to solicit foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election.
The report was declassified and released by the Intelligence Committee after a weeks-long dispute, which helped US Congress Speaker Nancy Pelosi launch a formal investigation into whether the Republican president should be impeached, reports Tanjug.
The whistleblower claims that Trump asked Zelensky in a phone conversation to investigate the son of his opponent in the presidential elections, Joseph Biden, just a few days after he froze military aid to Ukraine of almost 400 million euros.
