Members of the UN Security Council sharply criticized today the US announcement that they no longer consider Jewish settlements to be a violation of international law.
They emphasized that Jewish settlements are illegal and undermine a potential solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the two-state model.
The monthly meeting of the UN Security Council, dedicated to the Middle East, held just two days after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced it, was dominated by negative reaction to the new American policy.
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Dani Danon, supported the US move, saying it was "correcting a historical mistake".
Israel is not a member of the Security Council.
Kuwaiti Ambassador Mansur al Otaibi said the 14 members agreed today on a press release stating that Jewish settlements are illegal and that they support a two-state solution, the creation of an independent Palestine alongside Israel and the 2016 UN Security Council resolution.
Only one member - the USA - did not agree.
