At least 20 civilians were killed this Sunday in two attacks on markets in the north of Yemen, the United Nations said, reports Tanjug.

Among them are migrants because they gather in these places on their way to the rich Gulf states in search of a better life, Reuters reported.

The UN statement released today did not specify the nature of the attack on the Al-Raq market in Sada province, near the border with Saudi Arabia, or who was responsible, but said a large number of those killed or injured were Ethiopians.

A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia has been fighting the pro-Iranian Houthi movement in Yemen for almost five years.

Tens of thousands of people have died in the conflicts, and millions are on the verge of starvation.

The UN statement stated that 10 people were killed in the first attack, and that in a similar incident a week later, another 10 were killed and 22 people were wounded, including children.

"Every day the cost of this war becomes more unbearable," Liz Grande, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, said in a statement.

Thousands of migrants pass through Yemen every year from the Horn of Africa, due to drought and unemployment, they leave hoping for better earnings in Saudi Arabia and other rich Gulf states.
