Arms control, Ukraine and Syria will be the main topics of the meeting between Donald Trump, Mike Pompeo and Sergey Lavrov.
Lavrov is visiting Washington for the first time since May 2017, Voice of America reported.
The visit of the head of Russian diplomacy, however, is overshadowed by the official presentation of charges in the process of impeachment against Trump and the president's criticism of the internal report of the Department of Justice, which states that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was justified in opening an investigation into the connections between Trump's campaign staff in campaign of 2016 and Russia.
Lavrov first meets with Pompeo at the State Department, where they will hold a joint press conference. The two officials will then meet with Trump at the White House. The White House said Trump and Lavrov are expected to discuss arms control, election security and national security.
On Monday, Pompeo said in an interview with American media that Trump asked him to work on American-Russian business relations, and that he would also discuss arms control with Lavrov.
Pompeo and Lavrov have met several times over the past year, both in New York and in Russia, but so far they have not met in Washington.
Lavrov has not been to Washington since 2017. That year, on May 10, he was received by Trump in the Oval Office of the White House. The meeting caused a scandal because the US president was accused of revealing classified information about Syria.
