The extreme right-wing president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, said today that he "never thought" that he would be head of state, but also added that there were elements of divine influence in his rise.
"I never thought I would be president, no one gave us winners, but I believe it was God's will. He first saved my life and then gave me the mandate. I believe God is Brazilian," said Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro (64) was attacked and stabbed in September last year, during the election campaign, and was in a serious condition. Then, after being a member of parliament for almost three decades, he won the presidential elections, thanks to the huge support of the faithful.
He holds an ad hoc press conference almost every morning and greets a few supporters.
Today he was greeted in front of the residence by Santa Claus and a children's choir that sang religious songs.
"You are the best Christmas present to Brazil for 2020," said the man in the red suit, also expressing his support for the government's policy of liberalizing the carrying of weapons.
According to that Santa Claus, "families have the right to defend themselves". He then made a gun out of his fingers, which was Bolsonaro's trademark during the campaign.
