The Russian ship "Viktor Leonov" is sailing in international waters off the southeast coast of the United States and is making "unsafe maneuvers", US officials told CNN.
The Russian surveillance ship "Viktor Leonov" has been sailing off the coasts of South Carolina and Florida for the past few days, a US official said.
He added that the ship's movements are characterized as unsafe because it does not use lights for low visibility conditions and does not respond to calls from commercial ships trying to establish their position to avoid potential accidents.
A US Coast Guard official told CNN that the Coast Guard is issuing a "Marine Safety Information Bulletin" to alert mariners in the area to the Russian ship's presence and behavior.
"Viktor Leonov" has been regularly patrolling international waters along the US East Coast since 2015. The Russian ship also routinely visits the Caribbean, Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago.
