Syrian rebels are preventing civilians from fleeing dangerous areas in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta, the Russian military said.
The rebels are violating the cease-fire agreement in five Syrian provinces and in Eastern Ghouta, Interfax reports, referring to the director of the Russian Center for Peace and Reconciliation in Syria, Yuriy Yevtushenko.
One civilian was killed and six others were wounded in the last 24 hours from rebel shelling of residential areas in Damascus, Yevtushenko said, according to Reuters.
The Russian army announced earlier that Syrian rebels killed four civilians in Eastern Ghouta during protests, reports Tanjug.
Major General Vladimir Zolotukin said in Damascus that the killing shows that the rebels' threats against people who want to leave Eastern Ghouta are real, Reuters reported.
The United Nations Security Council recently unanimously adopted Resolution 2401, which calls for a thirty-day ceasefire across Syria to allow access for humanitarian aid and medical evacuation.
The resolution calls on all parties to immediately stop the occupation of populated areas including Ghouta, Yarmouk, Fou and Kefraya.
The Security Council also approved an exception to the ceasefire, stating that attacks against Islamic State extremists and groups close to Al Qaeda, such as the Nusra Front, could continue.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also ordered a ceasefire in Eastern Ghouta in order to create a "humanitarian corridor" through which civilians will be able to leave the area.
The ceasefire came into effect on February 27 and should be observed every day from 14 am to XNUMX pm.
