The leader of the opposition Democrats in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, said that US President Donald Trump does not have the authority to go to war with Iran without the approval of Congress.
Schumer said that Trump should have consulted the leaders of the Congress regarding the action of American forces in which the Iranian general Qassem Soleimani was killed, carried out in Baghdad on the night of Thursday to Friday, reports Radio Free Europe.
"The operation against Soleimani in Iraq was carried out without special authorization and prior notification or consultation with Congress. I am a member of Group 8, which is usually informed about operations of this importance, but I was not informed," Schumer said.
He added that the Trump administration "will need the approval of Congress and the American people if it plans a significant increase in troops and potential hostilities over a long period of time."
Unnamed US officials said this evening that the Pentagon has decided to send an additional 3.000 troops to the Middle East.
